Introduction to Literature

This course is primarily for 9th graders. As the title indicates, it includes the introduction to the many sections of English. We begin to analyze literature by looking at short stories, novels, and poems. We begin to look at Latin roots and their relationship to building a good vocabulary. We look at the foundations of high school grammar and begin to apply them to writing. In writing we begin to master high school level writing, starting with the components of a good paragraph, going to the modified 5-paragraph essay, and finally the research term paper. For SAT/PSAT preparation, we look at the 25-minute timed essay near the end of the year.

Textbook/Resource Materials Used:
A-Beka: Themes in Literature, Grammar III; from Wordsmith: Vocabulary (2 years of Latin roots, 1 year of Greek roots).
