English Literature

This course is designed for 12th grade level English students. It is pre-college level with the focus on writing for college. We write at least once a week either an in-class 25-minute SAT practice or a 40-minute AP practice or a 5-paragraph essay that is out of class. The 5-paragraph essay first quarter is designed to help with college essays. In following quarters, the 5-paragraph essay is coordinated with literature that we are studying. In Literature, our focus is English literature, looking at plays (especially Shakespeare), novels, and poetry. In vocabulary, our focus is again college preparatory with a teacher generated text that looks at the 350 most commonly used words on SAT tests and 40 word histories. In grammar, we focus on the most common mistakes made when writing – how to recognize them and correct them.

Textbook/Resource Materials Used:
In literature, Introduction to English Literature and Literature of England from A-Beka; In vocabulary, grammar, and writing the texts are all teacher generated.
